Movable Type, how do I hate thee
As you can see from entries below (if you're on the website), Movable Type has finally given up the ghost, and corrupted the database it runs on. It's partly my fault: the disk filled up, but, boy, is this software brittle.
Anyway, apologies for the mess below, I'm trying to fix it (without a lot of success). I'm moving over to textpattern soon.
Also, the OS upgraded itself, so some of my services, such as RSS Weather and Flickrcity are either not working or unpredictable. I'm moving to a new host, too.
this post intentionally left blank.
or how I always seem to come up with good ideas for other companies
I really really want these - Post It notes that look like ichat. They'd be so useful for commenting on paper documents, having a conversation on a whiteboard or noticeboard (or on the office kitchen fridge).
I'd also like status indicator Post Its for my office - they'd let people know if I was on holiday.

They could just print lots of bubbles in different colours with blanks to fill for the avatar - which you print youself on sheets of square precut stickers. These could also be used on charts showing if you're in the office, etc.
Yes, I've been having a lot of fun with my new Stanley knife and Scotch Up repositionable glue. And my avatar cartoon cat is Ray from Achewood.

my goodness, my Guinness
The digital edition of The Guardian is free for a couple of weeks, so I'm getting to see English adverts for the first time in a while.
This struck me. It's great - using the Guinness toucan in the advertising again, but highlighted something sad: Guinness isn't brewed in London anymore.
There was a taste difference between the London and Dublin Guinnesses, no matter what they said about treating the London water to be softer. London Guinness had a slightly sharper metallic twang, which I liked. I'm drinking the Irish Guinness in memoriam at the moment, and it is softer and smoother, and still a really fantastic beer, but it's different. I miss London Guinness.
If you're the kind of person that thinks Guinness is too bitter, try this: add a single shot of vodka (no more, no less) to a pint of Guinness. It somehow makes it super sweet.

agenda
Time for some blatant promotion.
Over the next few weeks and months, I'm speaking at a few events.
First off is part of Helsinki Design Week - I'll be on a panel organised by Ulla entitled 'Do It Yourself! The Impact of the amateur revolution on the design industry'. It's on the 22nd September, at 5pm in the Cable Factory.
The week after, I'll be on a panel on 'social computing' at the MIT Technology Review Emerging Technologies conference in Boston, alongside Messrs Butterfield and Schachter.
In November, I'll be at the Design Engaged conference, probably talking about personalisation, craft and pro-am, and finally there's a chance I'll be attending DUX, but there are other things happening I need to lock down before that is confirmed.
As always, if you're around, say hi!

upgrade
Currently upgrading Moveable Type. This is a test. It will become a post about how horridly fraught the whole experience has been.
