Loops 2 is out now – and they convened a panel at Foyles tonight to discuss music journalism: Paul Morley, Kev Kharas, Frances Morgan and Andy Miller (ex-OMM).
A few notes from memory, that probably don’t sound as revelatory as at the time. What struck me was the parallels between music journalism and the wider discussions of cultural criticism and curation. The discussion about the future of newspapers, magazines and journalism is basically the same as the future of books and publishing. Same talk of magazines and books being a better form factor for long prose than screens.
there used to be 104 music journalists. now there’s 104 million. / maybe we’ve basically heard all the different kinds of music there are. / the writers that influenced a lot of early music journalists (Ballard, Dick, Kant etc. etc.) would have loved the Internet, and the ability to link – what should we do with it? the text is just the beginning of a multidimentional creation. / we live in an age of more of more of more – and that’s great and exciting. but what does it mean? what changes? / most music journalists have no idea how a record is made or how music works / we need people to make sense of culture more than ever – at the time when there are less organisations willing to pay for them (to write) or for them to make a living / reissues
