I don’t make resolutions; they find me. This year it isn’t dieting, nor drinking less (they have more or less gone by the wayside already).
Coming out of nowhere is the need to explore classical music. I’ve dallied at the edges before, but I know little about it, especially anything that isn’t modern – Philip Glass and cohorts are already on heavy rotation.
So I’m looking for recommendations. A quick random clicking through tracks shows that I find a lot of it too, well, tuneful, if not a bit too happy. I’ve taken this advice, will investigate this, and using these threads as a base.
I have some of a free trial left with emusic, who stock at least the entire Naxos catalogue, so particular CD recommendations from there especially welcome. I’m avoiding iTunes Music Store because I don’t think the encoding is good enough for classical.
Not a bit too happy: Bach: Suites (6) for Violoncello Solo by Anner Bylsma (who makes Yo Yo Ma’s playing sound sappy).
As you are in Finland you should try some Sibelius if you haven’t already. Grieg is another Northern composer – the piano concerto and Peer Gynt come to mind but you may think these are a bit too “popular”. I expect these are available from Naxos. I have just bought Kurt Weill Symphonies 1 and 2 from Naxos but these may be an acquired taste as I grew up with his songs for the Dreigroschenoper etc.
