Why doesn’t your computer respond to your IM presence? Why do the applications bother you with notifications if you are Busy, Away, or Do Not Disturb?

I suppose you can figure out the answer to that yourself… but it’s an interesting idea nonetheless.
One problem, I’d see, though, is that your IM status doesn’t need to be correct. Personally I like keeping mine as ‘Online’ constantly because I’m too lazy to fiddle around with in and nobody needs to know when I’m sitting around pushing the mouse and when I’m not.
Linking application behaviour to the system’s screensaver service should be much simpler for both the user and makes of 3rd party IM applications.
That said… I can still remember System 7 versions of AfterDark scrolling the alert messages through the screensaver. Not quite what you suggest, but quite useful.
